Many Brain Injuries Are Caused By Oxygen Deprivation
Certain infant brain injuries are caused by Group B strep and other infections. However, the majority are due to lack of oxygen during pregnancy, labor or delivery. Here are a few examples:
- Umbilical cord entrapment — If the umbilical cord wraps itself around the infant's neck, it can cut off the baby's oxygen supply. Knots or kinks in the cord can also prevent oxygen from reaching the fetus's brain and cause severe damage.
- Improper resuscitation — If the baby stops breathing after birth, nurses must work to resuscitate him or her. However, errors such as inserting an endotracheal tube into the esophagus instead of into the trachea can make it impossible for the child to receive the oxygen he or she needs.
- Fetal acidosis — If carbon dioxide builds up in the baby's bloodstream, it can cause high levels of acid. In turn, such fetal acidosis can lead to brain damage or even infant death.
- Placenta abruption — If the placenta pulls away from the uterine wall, the fetus can develop oxygen insufficiency due to inadequate blood flow.
