The top 10 car crash sites: Places to beware of around Houston

Driver negligence and recklessness; vehicle malfunction; traffic light timing; bad intersection design. These are just a few of the factors that can contribute to deadly situations for Houston motorists.

Where safety precautions can be taken, one would expect that they would be. But that doesn't always happen. If a vehicle accident results, people get hurt or killed. Victims or their loved ones may have good reason to consider consulting with an attorney to be sure they understand their rights and the possible obligations of those who are responsible.

Recently, one of the local TV stations produced an item highlighting the top ten worst intersections in the Houston area. How the sites were determined was by cross-referencing state data on the highest-traffic routes with five years of accident data for Harris County. Here's the list they came up with in reverse order.

Number 10: Wallisville Road and 610.

Number 9: Beltway 8 and Highway 225

Number 8: Highways 1960 and 59

Number 7: FM 529 and Highway 6

Number 6: Highway 6 and Westheimer

Number 5: Beltway 8 and FM 1093

Number 4: I-45 and Louetta Road

Number 3: Beltway 8 and alternate U.S. Route 90

Number 2: FM 2920 and State Highway 249

And the number 1 intersection for the highest accident rate is: Genoa Red Bluff Road and Beltway 8.

KHOU put this list together and spoke to an accident reconstruction specialist and a number of residents who work close to some of the most accident-prone locations. They offered an array of views about why problems exist where they do.

In some instances, the traffic lights change fast and impatient drivers try to skirt them and push through intersections. Some of the sites feature a lot of semitrailer truck traffic. The big rigs make wide turns and take a lot of time to clear lanes, creating hazards for other drivers.

Asked about the issues, the Texas Department of Transportation said it sees no immediate need for fixes. Instead, officials urge drivers to be aware, beware, and obey the law.

Who thinks that will do much?
