Intoxication suspected cause in fatal accident in Texas

It is presumed that most drivers understand the serious responsibilities which come with operating a motor vehicle. Though each state has laws meant to keep the roadways as safe as possible, it is ultimately up to each driver to conduct him or herself in a way that ensures his or her personal safety, as well as the safety of those with whom he or she shares the road. A Texas highway became the scene of a tragedy recently when a fatal accident occurred due to the alleged irresponsible actions of a driver.

Baytown police received repeated calls early Sunday morning reporting a vehicle which was apparently heading west in an eastbound lane of Interstate 10. By the time officers were able to reach the scene, it was too late. They came upon a car that was engulfed in flames and saw other motorists attempting to put out the fire. The wrong-way driver had allegedly crashed into the vehicle causing it to catch fire as a result of the impact. A passenger in that automobile was pronounced dead on site.

Both the driver of the wrong-way vehicle and the one that was hit were flown to area hospitals for immediate care. Reports list both in critical condition. A responding police officer reported that intoxicated driving is suspected to have been a central cause of the accident.

The name of the deceased was withheld pending notification of his or her family.  Family members who suffer the untimely death of a loved one due to the alleged negligence or reckless driving of another are able, under Texas law, to file a civil claim in court. Doing so can sometimes lead to monetary compensation, which, while paling in comparison to the grave losses endured, might help to ease the financial burdens that can sometimes result from a fatal accident.
