Texas ranks last in nationwide study of driver safety

A recent study has ranked drivers in Texas as being the least safe in the country.

Texas may have some of the worst drivers in the country if a new study is anything to go by. As the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports, a recent study, using federally compiled data, shows that drivers in Texas are tied with drivers in Louisiana for being, overall, the most dangerous drivers in the United States. The survey ranked all states and the District of Columbia on five different safety measures, such as speeding and careless driving. While Texas did not rank last in any one category, it did poorly in all categories to give it the title of the country’s worst drivers.

Most dangerous drivers in the country

The study by Car Insurance Comparison used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to rank every state in the country in terms of the safety of their drivers. The study ranked each state plus D.C. in five categories: drunk driving, speeding, careless driving, failure to obey, and deaths per miles traveled.

The results showed that Texas was third-worst for drunk driving, ninth-worst for speeding, and ninth-worst for fatalities per miles traveled. It was also among the 15 worst states in the categories of careless driving and failure to obey. Those poor results make Texas, which had previously been ranked fourth-worst overall for driver safety, the state with the worst drivers in the country, along with Louisiana’s drivers. Minnesota, Vermont, and Virginia were ranked as having the best drivers overall.

Deadlier roads

As USA Today reports, the study comes just as road safety is becoming a matter of growing concern across the country. In 2015, for example, there was a 7.2 percent increase in traffic fatalities nationwide, with close to 35,100 people dying in traffic accidents. That increase came after long-term declines in traffic fatalities. In Texas there has been, on average, at least one traffic fatality per day for the past 16 years.

The increase in traffic fatalities is partly due to the recovering economy and cheap gas, both of which allow people to drive for longer and more often. However, the study’s authors also point out that careless driving had the strongest correlation with a state’s overall safety ranking. Careless driving includes distracted driving, such as texting and driving, and its effect on this year’s rankings show just how dangerous not paying attention to the road can be.

Personal injury law

As the above study shows, Texas’ roads can be dangerous, especially with so many careless and reckless drivers out there. For anybody who has been hurt in a motor vehicle accident, it is important to contact a personal injury attorney as soon as possible for help. An experienced attorney can assist accident victims in a number of ways, not least of which by helping them pursue any claims they may be entitled to.
