A fatal Texas bus accident along President George Bush Turnpike took the lives of two people and injured dozens more. Bus accidents can lead to wrongful death suits if a bus driver’s negligence causes a death.

The bus accident occurred when the bus weaved across the highway and crashed into two concrete barriers. The bus then turned over in the center median of the highway. The Cardinal Coach Line bus was carrying about 45 people to a casino resort in Oklahoma. The organizer of the trip was killed in the accident along with one other woman. Over 40 people were taken to the hospital, including the bus driver. Many suffered from broken bones and other various injuries.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Cardinal Coach has not had any fatal accidents in the last two years. However, the bus company has had its share of financial problems. The owners of the bus company had to file for bankruptcy in 2008. The owners’ attorney said that the bankruptcy proceeding was discharged months later and was not related to any safety issues. The Texas Department of Public Safety has conducted roadside inspections and has inspected the buses multiple times over the past couple of years. A compliance review in 2009 indicates that Cardinal Coach buses received a satisfactory rating.

However, this recent accident has drawn more attention to the issue of motor coach safety. A new law, approved in July, sets deadlines for the U.S. Department of Transportation to put certain safety terms into effect. Many believe that the law should be implemented faster, especially the provisions relating to seat belts and the upgrading of bus equipment. Hopefully with these new safety laws, bus accidents will be prevented and innocent lives will be saved.

The loved ones and surviving family members’ of anyone that dies due to another’s negligence may seek compensation for their injuries. They may seek damages for pain and suffering, loss of companionship, loss of consortium and loss of future earnings.
