24 injured when man attacks driver of Texas-bound bus

On reflection, it's amazing that no one was killed. Twenty-four people were, however, reported injured today after a man allegedly went berserk on a Greyhound bus heading from Los Angeles to Dallas and began attacking the driver.

According to officials, the bus accident happened a little before 2 a.m. on Interstate 10 near the Arizona town of Tonopah. That's about 50 miles west of Phoenix. The bus was carrying more than 40 passengers.

A statement by the Arizona Department of Public Safety says a 25-year-old man allegedly jumped up from his seat, yelled that he was going to flip the bus and started grabbing at the steering wheel. Several passengers reportedly banded together to try to stop the attack and the driver managed to eventually bring the bus to a stop just feet from oncoming traffic.

In the wake of the incident, the suspect and a woman described as his girlfriend fled the scene. But officials say they came back from the surrounding desert about 30 minutes later.

The man was taken into custody and taken to a hospital in Phoenix. Officials say he was not physically injured, but apparently was so under the influence of drugs that he was hospitalized to clear his system. He is now said to be facing charges of felony endangerment, assault and aggravated assault.

Other injured passengers were rushed to various hospitals in the Phoenix area. Three of them had to be airlifted from the scene. Greyhound says buses are being dispatched to help those who were not hurt get to their final destinations.

Victims of this incident may wonder if they have any grounds to seek compensation for the pain and suffering they have been put through. If there is, the question then may be from whom? Such questions are best answered by consulting an attorney with experience in such matters.
