Driver in deadly 2013 bus crash won't face criminal charges

Most people have no reason to engage the legal system in a major way. They go through the legal steps that are part of everyday life -- paying taxes, getting licenses renewed and other such activities. The processes that have to be pursued to hold someone accountable in more extreme circumstances may be foreign.

What often results is that no action is taken at all and victims who may have suffered as a result of another person's negligence or recklessness may wind up foregoing compensation they may have a right to. That's why the advice to consult with an attorney is so often offered.

What sparks this particular post are legal matters surrounding a bus accident that resulted in three senior citizens being killed and dozens of others being injured.

We first wrote about this Dallas-area crash back in April. At the time of that report, investigations hadn't been completed and details of what happened hadn't been determined.

Since then, though, the Department of Public Safety has issued a report saying that the bus inexplicably swerved off the freeway and crashed into a concrete barrier. It also said the driver of the bus was at fault.

The DPS recommended that criminal charges of criminally negligent homicide be brought against the driver. But this week, prosecutors in Dallas County confirmed that a grand jury refused to issue an indictment.

Some might believe that that would be the end of the story, but it is not. There are more than a dozen personal injury lawsuits pending against the driver in connection with crash.

It serves as a reminder that criminal court may not be the sole means through which a victim might seek accountability.
