Car accident claims life of Texas man -- driver facing charges

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can greatly affect the decision-making process of the person who decided to do so. It can make bad choices that could adversely affect others seem like reasonable alternatives. A recent car accident that claimed the life of a Texas man underscores the point.

According to court documents, the fatal accident happened when a 23-year-old man allegedly failed to stop at a red light. He reportedly smashed his sport-utility vehicle into the side of a Corvette that was traveling through the intersection. The Texas driver of the Corvette and his mother, who was a passenger, both suffered injuries in the collision.

The driver of the Corvette did not survive the accident. He was pronounced dead while still at the accident location. His mother was taken to a nearby Texas hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening. An update on her condition was not available at the time of this report.

The man thought responsible for the accident was charged with manslaughter while driving drunk, according to court reports. He was taken from the scene of the accident to jail. A passenger in his car, an unidentified man, ran from the scene on foot. The driver's alcohol level has not been publicly released.

The family of the man who died in this tragic car accident retains the right to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver of the SUV in a civil court. The woman who was hurt has the right to file a personal injury lawsuit against him as well. Successfully litigated claims could give them the resources to deal with any existing end-of-life issues or medical expenses stemming from the car accident. It would also hold the man who allegedly caused it financially accountable for the choices he appears to have made.
