Former University of Texas runner killed -- reckless driver?

Most people in Texas know that pedestrians should be allowed the right-of-way when they are walking down the street. Someone traveling on foot doesn't have the protection given by a car and is more vulnerable to injury in the case of an accident. This was proven tragically true recently by an allegedly reckless driver who allegedly struck and killed a young man walking down the street.

The 22-year-old man was a member of the track team at the University of Texas for two seasons. He was walking alongside the road when he was struck by a pickup truck. After the collision, the driver of the truck drove away quickly, according to witnesses. The victim died while still at the accident's location.

Texas law enforcement officials continue to look for the driver they think is responsible for the young man's death. They say the truck he or she was driving was probably damaged in the accident. They believe they are looking for a vehicle with headlights that are no longer intact and a vehicle that has newly acquired dents in the front end.

Police say the driver of the truck could face felony charges once he or she is caught. In addition to any criminal charges filed, the driver could also be named in a wrongful death lawsuit filed in civil court by the family of the man who died. They may allege that the evidence demonstrates the trucker was a reckless driver who fled the scene and left their loved one to die in the roadway. Both the driver and the driver's employer could be held financially accountable if the victim's family can establish the fatal accident was caused by the trucker's negligence.
