Wrongful death can cause devastating loss in the lives of many people and create a myriad of emotions. Loved ones who have lost a family member to the reckless actions of another driver may feel a necessity to pursue justice. A former Texas police officer was recently indicted for his apparent involvement in an accident that caused the purported wrongful death of an elderly man.

The accident that eventually resulted in the elderly man’s fatality occurred when the police officer responded to a call by car. Reports indicate that the squad vehicle used on the day of the accident was driven at speeds beyond a safe measure when responding to the call, supposedly without sirens or lights. While the officer allegedly sped his car in response to the traffic call, he slammed into the back of the elderly man’s vehicle.

The elderly man suffered multiple injuries from the impact, which eventually took his life, although details describing the nature of his injuries have not been released. The aging victim passed away about three months after the accident. In some cases, the victim of a car crash may begin to experience symptoms of serious injury days or weeks after the initial accident occurred.

The officer was charged with manslaughter and is accused of operating his vehicle recklessly, which ultimately caused the death of the elderly man. In Texas, a manslaughter verdict can be accompanied by a varied sentence behind bars; anywhere from two to 20 years depending on the decision of the courts. A person who suffers the wrongful death of a loved one in a car accident from the poor decision of another party may also attempt to collect restitution for the damages inflicted by filing a civil lawsuit.
