Texas man receives sentence for fatal accident

There are certain places that people should have a reasonable expectation of personal safety. One of these places should be in their bedroom. Unfortunately, one man was killed after a drunk driver drove into his apartment while he was sleeping in Texas. The driver was recently sentenced as a result of charges stemming from the fatal accident.

The incident occurred in April 2011. A man drove into an apartment building, killing a 19-year-old father. The child's mother was burned on her arms and continues to suffer from the effects of her injuries. The man who caused the accident was originally tried in 2012, but that trial ended with a mistrial.

He was retried in Sept. 2014, and a guilty verdict in regard to intoxication manslaughter charges was rendered. He has recently been sentenced to 120 days of house arrest followed by 10 years of probation. He must also pay approximately $40,000 in restitution to the man's family.

There is nothing that can make up for the unexpected death of a loved one. In addition to a family's grief, they must also face the financial consequences of the fatal accident. While this Texas family may receive restitution, this simply may not be enough to cover funeral costs and well as the costs of raising a child without a father. Many people in similar situations have sought financial relief in a civil court. If they can prove that their loved one's death was caused by a driver's negligence -- in this case, a claim supported by the recent conviction -- the court could award them damages to ease the financial stresses created by the loss.
