Texas program shows students the pain a drunk driver can cause

Students in a Texas high school were recently given a presentation just before classes were recessed for spring break. The program demonstrated the consequences of being a drunk driver. Students played parts as actors in the demonstration, which was meant to raise awareness among the student body about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The intense dramatic presentation included hundreds of actors. A mock accident involving a drunk driver was staged. The attempted rescue of the victim, the victim's death and even funeral services were performed in as realistic a way as possible. Local medical centers, fire departments and law enforcement participated in the presentation. One of the student organizers said that the program is to be considered a success if it leaves an impact on even one person.

The Shattered Dreams program began close to two decades ago. A trauma coordinator who helps with the program stated that it is important to teach students about the life choices they make when deciding to drink and drive or ride in a vehicle with a driver who has been drinking. The program providers hope that the realistic images and demonstrations in the presentation will leave lasting impressions on young people and perhaps prevent future tragedies.

When a person is injured in an accident caused by a drunk driver or suffers the loss of an immediate family member, a lawsuit can be filed in civil court in order to seek compensation for damages. Often, the unexpected death of a family member, especially if he or she was a breadwinner, can cause a devastating financial crisis, which might be alleviated by monies awarded in a successfully litigated claim. Those in Texas who are considering filing a claim may benefit from contacting a legal professional with experience in motor vehicle accident cases.
