Man accused of causing multiple deaths in Texas accidents

A horrific chain of events resulted in multiple tragedies in Texas in April 2015. One man has been charged for the deaths of two victims and injuries to several others. The same man was reportedly responsible for three separate accidents occurring within a short time of each other.

The 34-year-old man who stands accused of intoxication manslaughter, failure to stop and render aid, and intoxication assault is said to have caused three separate accidents in three hours' time. Houston police responded to the first accident at approximately 3:30 p.m. in Fannin. The man was driving a pickup truck and reportedly hit a car that was carrying two occupants. Both people in the car, a woman and a child, were injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

According to reports, officers at the scene issued a citation to the man, then permitted him to leave. A couple hours later, the same man reportedly struck a 61-year-old homeless man on the side of a road and killed him. He allegedly left the scene and fell unconscious behind the wheel at a red light. Reports indicate that another driver honked at the man in order to rouse him, at which point he is said to have accelerated his vehicle, sped through a red light and crashed into yet another car, causing catastrophic injuries to a mother and 6-year-old child. Sadly, the child later succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.

The man was arrested after the third accident due to his reported failure of a sobriety test. In Texas, victims injured in collisions caused by drunk drivers or other reckless or negligent motorists, can file personal injury claims against the at-fault party. When deaths occur, immediate family members who survive the loss of their loved ones may file a claim on behalf of the decedents. A compensatory award may be ordered in a successfully litigated case as retribution for damages victims have suffered.
