Many Texas car accidents involved a distracted driver

A recent article discussed an ongoing problem among motorists on Texas roadways. According to the article, six percent of all motor vehicle accidents in the state involved a distracted driver. One of the most common distractions that result in drivers crashing their vehicles is reportedly texting while driving.

TxDot issued a recent press release, stating that Texas roads were the scenes of 483 fatalities caused by distracted drivers in 2014. These fatalities were part of 100,917 distracted driving accidents, along with 3,000 serious injuries. A deputy executive director from TxDot said that one in five accidents in the state is caused by driver distraction.

He reminded motorists that fiddling with knobs on a radio, eating, texting or talking on the phone can create distractions for those behind the wheel, which can place themselves and all other travelers in serious jeopardy for potential injury, and, in worst cases, death. Close to 45 percent of Texas drivers who were questioned said that they have used a telephone while driving. Eighty-three percent of those claimed that they were well aware of the dangers of doing so.

In a recent campaign meant to raise public awareness on the issue, authorities listed reading, watching movies, personal grooming and adjusting a navigational system as some of the most common distractions known to take a driver's attention away from the road. When a person suffers injury because of the actions of a distracted driver, he or she is entitled to file a legal claim against the at-fault party. In a successfully litigated case, the court can award compensation that can then be used to help offset medical bills or other costs that an injured victim incurs through treatment and recovery.
