Suspected reckless driver causes tragedy in Texas

Those who operate motor vehicles in Texas share roadways with thousands of other motorists. It is crucial, therefore, that each driver act with diligence and caution behind the wheel for the sake of the common good and safety of all travelers. A reckless driver is a menace to the road. Apparent disregard for traffic regulations can lead to disaster as was the case in a recent incident involving three vehicles.

Moments before 2 a.m. on a recent Saturday, a motorist reportedly failed to obey a red light. Instead, it appears he ran the light and attempted to make a turn into an eastbound lane. The vehicle allegedly crashed into two others, sending one victim to an area medical center for emergency care.

Sadly, the man, said to be more than 60 years of age, later succumbed to his injuries. Police have charged the driver deemed responsible for the accident with intoxication manslaughter. The driver of the other car that was hit said that the man whose vehicle hit his approached him after the crash and apologized for running the red light.

Texas law allows an immediate family member who has suffered the untimely death of a loved one due to the actions of a reckless driver to file a wrongful death claim in a civil court. Though it is difficult to think beyond such grief, families can take comfort in knowing that justice can be sought on behalf of their deceased family members who have become innocent victims of the negligent actions of others. When the court finds that another person is responsible for an accident victim's death, it can award compensation that can be used to help alleviate funeral costs and other financial losses associated with the incident.
