A New Kind Of Distracted Driving

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving is the number one cause of death on the highway for drivers and passengers ages three to thirty three. It's more dangerous than drunk driving or speeding. Unfortunately, a new distraction is now causing harm on our highways.

Car Accidents Involving Pokemon Go

According to an article in Tech Insider, fans of Pokemon Go play the game on their smart phones, finding beacons by physically traveling outside. The players look for virtual beacons planted by the company in the GPS app on the phone. It resembles an electronic version of a Treasure Hunt. Niantic Inc., the company responsible for the Pokemon Go craze, creates virtual characters near the beacons. When a gamer gets close to a character, he lops a Poke ball at the thing and captures it.

In order to play the game, the fan has to watch the screen on his phone constantly. Driving while playing means the player will spend more time locked onto the screen than looking at the road.

Players have run into (sometimes literally) some odd situations. A 28 year old driver in Auburn, New York crashed into a tree earlier this month while concentrating on the character he was chasing. Shayla Wiggins, a player in rural Wyoming, found a dead body near a beacon on July 8th of this year. Players have wandered through the Holocaust Museum in New York and the Auschwitz Museum in Poland following the game. Perhaps the oddest of all, former United States Marine, Louis Park, now fighting in Iraq with the Iraqi army saw a Pokemon Go creature called a Squirtle perched on top of his machine gun.

Victims Can Seek Compensation

Whenever a negligent driver causes harm to someone else, the victim may be entitled to compensation. This is definitely true in distracted driving accidents caused by people driving while playing Pokemon Go. Attorney Brian Jensen is experienced in helping motor vehicle wreck victims pursue fair compensation through personal injury claims. Free consultations are available.
