Texas Bucks Potentially Scary Driving Trend

Recent reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed a shocking increase in driving fatalities in 2015. One of the articles detailing this NHTSA report from www.overdriveonline.com, cited increased fatality rates essentially everywhere with the exception of states like Texas (in region 6), which actually saw a decrease.

Economic Factors At Play In Driving Fatalities

What makes this report most alarming is that the increase in fatalities for 2015 (35, 200 deaths) is the largest fatality number seen since 2008. The second attention grabbing concern within the numbers of the report is that the increase was reflected in almost every driving category, from young drivers (up 10 percent) to truck related occurrences (up 4 percent).

Some experts are accrediting the improved economy, including lower fuel costs, as the source behind this spike, the largest in 7 years. In addition to the lower fuel costs, the improving U.S. economy has also encouraged people to drive differently according to some analysis from individuals like the NHTSA Administrator, Dr. Mark Rosekind. Such changes as driving more miles, or taking vacations that come with improved economical conditions equates to drivers covering more miles and covering those miles often on less familiar roads and conditions.

Continued Concerns For 2016

With the U.S. economy not showing any significant signs of slowing at any time in the immediate future, the apparently inherent dangers that come with economic improvement and driving habits will most likely continue. Making people aware, improving driving technologies and passing better laws (i.e. motorcycle helmets) are some suggestions being pushed to increase safety and reduce the fatality rates.
