Will New Tech Save Older Drivers?

Technology is moving at a fast pace in all areas of the American lifestyle, but one of the most prominent places tech is taking over is in the auto industry. With Tesla and Google at the forefront of self-driving cars and specialized motion alerts guiding a driver of any age, technological advances will become especially instrumental in assisting senior drivers.

New Car Technology Benefits Senior Drivers

Drivers over 65 are more prone to accidents than most other demographics, and much of that is due to poor eyesight and hearing, confusion using on and off ramps, and delayed reaction time when an abrupt halt is needed to avoid injury to themselves or someone else. New technologies in the auto industry are taking the guesswork out of driving with automatic stopping, lane changes, and slowing down to follow the flow of traffic using sensors, and cameras with audible motion detectors have already been implemented into many new vehicles.

According to The Houston Chronicle, automakers are rolling out more technology just as Baby Boomers are turning 70. By 2030, the U.S. Census Bureau expects there will be nearly 54 million people aged 70 or older living in the country, up from about 31 million in 2014. Based on current driver trends, about 80 percent of that group is expected to be licensed to drive, and that percentage could rise even higher if technology in vehicles continues to rapidly advance and allows seniors to remain safe behind the wheel well into their senior lives.

Help For Victims Of Auto Accidents

Regardless of age, technology will help you avoid accidents, but it isn't foolproof. Car tech is far from perfect, and accidents will still happen. If you've been the victim of a car wreck, an experienced attorney may be able to help you pursue compensation. Having an auto attorney on hand is essential to protecting your family from the blunders of life that even the highest technology can't evade. At the law offices of B.L. Jensen, we stand up for the rights of auto accident victims.
