Safety agency sets guidelines for phone makers in the battle against distracted driving

There is an ongoing debate among safety experts concerning the distraction posed by cell phones. Law makers across the country were quick to adopt laws banning texting and driving. Many question whether those laws go far enough. Some experts believe that any cell phone use, including hands-free calling, represents an unsafe level of distraction for drivers. The question of what cell phone use is acceptable when behind the wheel has a new answer. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently released a set of guidelines for cell phone makers and software developers. The guidelines are voluntary, but the NHTSA will undoubtedly pressure companies into acknowledging the role of these products in distracted driving crashes.

Study considers autonomous trucks and drive-time limitations

The American Transportation Research Institute released a report concerning the impact of autonomous trucks and the trucking industry as a whole. The report covered a variety of issues, among them the impact of self-driving trucks on hours-of-service limitations. This is an area of contention between truck drivers, trucking companies and safety advocates. The ATRI is an industry group, but its research does pose interesting questions about the future of trucking safety.

Are unenforced trucking regulations causing accidents?

The trucking industry has faced a driver shortage for some time now. Many companies struggle to find qualified and experienced drivers to fill open positions. This shortage could explain why some businesses do not work as hard as they could to make sure that they are not hiring an unfit truck driver. An investigation into a recent accident inspired the National Transportation Safety Board to push for tighter screening and adherence to existing regulations about driver conduct.
