How to avoid rollover accidents

Not all vehicles are the same, especially when you go from driving a sedan to an SUV or truck. Larger vehicles have a higher likelihood to rollover if the driver does not operate the vehicle safely. This is noted on all visors in the front of the vehicles and in the owner's manual.

In order to avoid a rollover accident when driving a larger vehicle, you need to know quite a few different things when it comes to operating the SUV/truck.

The first of these is turning the vehicle. Turning an SUV is much different than turning a sedan. When taking a turn, even around the most innocent curves, the driver must reduce speed and avoid turning the wheel in a sharp manner. If the SUV is going too fast into a curve and the wheel is turned sharply, a rollover accident might not be too far behind.

One of the best ways to avoid a rollover accident is to know the vehicle you are driving. If you have never driven an SUV in your life, or have only driven one occasionally, you need to get acclimated to the vehicle. Learn how the vehicle handles on all types of roads and different conditions.

A great way to learn the new SUV is to take it on multiple test drives with a dealer before purchase. If you don't like how it handles or cannot seem to adjust, then you know not to purchase it. This will help avoid a rollover accident in its entirety.

If you are still uncomfortable after purchase, take the vehicle to a large, empty parking lot. Practice turning around tight corners and in circles at slow speeds to get a feel for the vehicle.

Driving courses are another great way to avoid rollover accidents. Even though most driving courses are intended for new drivers, it never hurts to take one again when moving to a larger type of vehicle. You might be able to pick the brain of the instructor regarding SUVs and how to avoid rollovers.

Rollover accidents are some of the scariest a driver or passenger can be involved in on the roads. Visit our page to learn more about your legal rights following vehicle rollovers.
