Safety tips for school bus drivers and passengers

The National Safety Council has noted that school bus transportation is safer than walking to school or riding in a family vehicle to school, but accidents still happen. Each day, 23 million children are taken to and from school in a school bus. Here are some safety tips for drivers and passengers.

School bus drivers should always keep the noise level at a minimum inside the bus in order to avoid distractions. It is easier said than done when dealing with young kids, but it is important to everyone's safety.

Prior to leaving a bus stop, the driver should make sure all of the students are sitting down properly and even buckled in if the bus has seat belts. The driver should also make sure there are no children running towards the bus who might be late.

School bus drivers should activate their yellow lights well in advance of coming to a stop to pick up children. The longer motorists are given warning, the less likely it is for an accident to occur.

Children should be at their bus stop no later than five minutes prior to the scheduled arrival of the bus. This helps avoid children running down the street to catch the bus, potentially causing a tragic accident.

When the bus arrives at the stop children should line up six feet from the curb and never walk towards the bus until it is no longer in motion.

If a child needs to cross in front of the bus to board, be sure to do so at least 10 feet in front of the bus. The child should be able to make eye contact with the driver at all times when crossing in front of the bus. Children should never cross behind the bus, ever.

If a child drops an item in front of the bus, he or she should never pick it up without first alerting the driver. A child bending over to pick up an item will not be seen by the driver.
