Texas distracted drivers educated on safe driving practices

On Behalf of | Jan 13, 2017 | Car Accidents

Texting and driving has become a major epidemic not only in Houston, Texas, but throughout the state and country. The explosion of cellphones has made driving even more dangerous as drivers continue to use them while behind the wheel. The only way local authorities can stop distracted driving is by educating the public.

There are more than 100,000 accidents in the state of Texas each year that involve some sort of distracted driving. The Texas A&M Transportation Institute conducted a survey in 2015 that found 38 percent of Texas drivers admitted to talking on the phone while driving at least a portion of the time. To make matters worse, the study found that 21.2 percent said they send or read text messages or emails when driving.

Distracted driving is defined as an activity that can distract the driver’s eyes from the road, or primary task of driving. Any and all distractions not only endanger the driver, but also the passengers in the vehicle, other drivers and passengers on the roads and bystanders.

The most common, and recognizable distraction is that of cellphone use, but there are others that can cause accidents. Other distractions include reading, shaving, eating, drinking, programming a GPS, changing the radio stations, looking for a new CD and anything related to using a cellphone.

One of the best ways to avoid using a cellphone while driving is to put it out of reach. This includes in a bag in the backseat or trunk, in the glove compartment or turn it over to a passenger to hold. If a text message, email or phone call cannot wait, pull off the road at a safe location, put the vehicle in park and then handle your business.

Distracted driving should be the topic of conversation in all households, no matter the age of the driver. Education is the best way to help curb the issue.
