4 tips for staying safe as a pedestrian near big trucks

You have to get to work every day, but that doesn't mean you need to put yourself at risk of an accident. Truck drivers have limited vision and maneuverability due to the size of their vehicles. While many accidents are due to negligent actions outside your control, there are some tips you should keep in mind to keep yourself safe.

1. Pay attention to blind spots

One of the main reasons people get into accidents with trucks is because drivers can't see them. There are a few different blind spots around the vehicle. Don't walk directly behind a truck, and if you are close to the side of the truck, assume the driver can't see you.

A good thing to remember is that if you can see the mirrors, the driver should see you. However, it's always in your best interests to assume that he or she doesn't see you, so you can take precautions before entering the truck's path.

2. Watch out for larger loads

When a vehicle has a larger load, it makes maneuvering more difficult. The driver might need more space to back up in a parking lot, for example, making it important to stay back and out of the way while the driver parks. The driver also has a harder time seeing around the load, so stay further away than usual to make sure the driver sees you. When a truck has a wide load, be prepared for it to make extra-wide turns and stay out of its way.

3. Remember that stopping is harder for trucks

Tractor-trailers take longer to slow down and stop than other vehicles. You should not attempt to dart past them or assume you can get across the street because the driver will have time to slow down for you. It's more likely that the driver won't be able to stop in time, putting you at risk of being involved in an accident. It's better to play it safe and avoid crossing a street when oncoming traffic appears to be heading your way.

4. Stay visible

A good way to avoid being in an accident is to stay as visible as possible. Pedestrians should wear bright clothing, or choose reflective clothing if they will be near traffic. This is particularly important when you walk at night. Carry a flashlight or glow stick to stand out.

Safety isn't just up to you, but using these tips helps you prevent unnecessary accidents. If a truck driver does hit you due to negligence, be it drowsy driving, drinking and driving or distracted driving, you can file a claim against him or her for compensation.
