Three people were ejected and three were injured in an accident involving an SUV and a semitruck on the eastbound lanes of I-20 in Sweetwater. The accident caused multiple serious injuries but no fatalities. Two people suffered serious injuries in the crash, while four others, including two children, suffered non-incapacitating injuries.
According to police, the victims injured in the crash were from one family. The family was headed from Midland to Dallas to get on a place for a vacation.
Police at the scene said that the semitruck went to change lanes, didn’t see the SUV, and struck it. The force of the collision sent the SUV into the center median. The SUV then came back into the road, skidded and rolled over into the median.
When the rollover occurred, an infant, a toddler and a woman were all ejected from the SUV. A second woman became trapped in the vehicle. Two men in the vehicle escaped the accident with minor cuts and bruises. Two patients, the mother and grandmother of the children, were flown to hospitals in Lubbock and Abilene.
The two children, both under the age of two, were transported along with their father and grandfather to the hospital in Sweetwater. The driver of the semitruck was not injured in the accident, which occurred around 10 a.m. on the morning of May 9.
The Texas Department of Public Safety has not yet released a cause for the accident. Investigators did not comment on whether or not alcohol played a role in the early morning crash. It is also unknown if there were any other people in the truck at the time of the accident. There has been no update on the status of all the victims taken to hospitals.
