An I-10 truck accident sandwiches a pickup killing one

It took cleanup crews a little more than six hours to clean up the scene of a second accident along I-10 the morning of Sept. 22, 2017. The first, which occurred near the Sjolander Road exit, sent five people to the hospital with injuries.

The second accident, which happened near the John Martin Road exit, was much worse. It involved a pickup truck becoming sandwiched between two tractor-trailers. It claimed the life of the pickup driver and severely injured the passenger.

With the second accident, a 67-year-old Woodlands man was driving along I-10 in the eastbound direction around 10:10 a.m., when his pickup was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer. The pickup truck was pushed into the rear of another 18-wheeler in front of him. The decedent and his passenger, a 39-year-old from Spring, ultimately became sandwiched between the two tractor-trailers as a result.

It was determined that the pickup's driver died immediately as a result of his involvement in the accident. His younger passenger was airlifted from the accident scene in critical condition.

The 26-year-old trucker, who was at the wheel of the 18-wheeler that initially struck the pickup from the rear, was transported by ambulance from the accident scene. He was listed as being in stable condition upon arrival at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Houston.

The roadway was ultimately cleared by 4:40 p.m., after investigators have been given an opportunity to try to make sense of why the fatal crash occurred.

It's unclear if criminal charges will be filed in the case. However, the best case scenario is that the family of the pickup's driver and passenger are working with a Houston area motor vehicle accident attorney and will soon file a wrongful death case.

If the lawsuit is successful against the driver of the 18-wheeler, the family will be able to recover funeral costs and medical expenses associated with the untimely death and unexpected injuries the accident victims suffered.
