A 14-year-old Houston boy dies in rollover crash

| Jun 14, 2017 | Vehicle Rollovers

A 14-year-old boy was killed on Saturday, May 28, 2017, as he and his family rode their sports utility vehicle (SUV) along Interstate 10 (I-10) in Jefferson County. The fatal rollover accident occurred at 12:30 p.m., right as the Ford Explorer he had been riding in was approaching the busy highway’s junction with FM 365.

The Houston boy and his family had been riding along I-10 when one of the rear tires of their Explorer blew out. The SUV overturned multiple times, covering the roadway in car parts and debris. The significantly mangled vehicle ultimately came to rest on its side.

A justice of the peace was among one of the first responders to arrive at the accident scene along with officers from the Texas Department of Public Safety (TXDOT.) He pronounced the teen as deceased upon his arrival.

The 61-year-old father of the decedent had been driving the vehicle at the time the incident occurred. He was airlifted to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital from the accident scene with serious injuries.

There were three other passengers in the SUV when the rollover occurred. The youngest was 11 and the oldest was 38. It’s unclear if they’re relatives of the victim. They were all transported to Baptist Hospital by ambulance. They are all believed to be in stable condition.

Police are still investigating whether any other factors such as speed, reckless or intoxicated driving, weather, or another vehicle contributed to this SUV’s rollover. It’s, however, believed that they did not.

While single-car rollover accidents are relatively uncommon, SUVs are most apt to be involved in one. This has a great deal to do with their high profile, which gives way to increased wind resistance. This, plus an SUVs relatively high center of gravity, gives way to this car having a significantly higher risk of rollovers than others.

If your loved one has either been injured or lost his or her life as a result of his or her involvement in a rollover crash, then you may entitled to compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages and other damages. An attorney can advise you as to the merits of filing a claim in your case.
