How to safely operate an SUV

Safely operating a vehicle is important for not only you, but those in your vehicle and those on the roads around you. There is a big difference between driving a car and driving an SUV. The difference is that SUVs have a higher chance of rollover when driven at high rates of speed or when making turns. Here are some tips for safely operating an SUV in Texas.

If you have never driven an SUV before, it's a good idea to learn how to drive it before hitting the open roads. This will help you get a feel for the vehicle, how to turn it, how to operate curves and how to navigate difficult terrain.

Do not overload your SUV with people or cargo. Heavier or uneven loads can lead to the SUV rolling over when making a turn or if involved in an accident.

Avoid sharp turns at all costs. An SUV is not designed to make sharp, sudden or tight turns at quick rates of speed. This type of vehicle operates much differently compared to a sports car or a sedan. Because it is higher off the road and wider, it has an increased risk of rollover.

SUVs have limited visibility, especially when they have tinted windows. Some SUV drivers might not be able to see the other vehicles or pedestrians around them. The mirrors on an SUV require a more outward placement because of the extended width of the vehicle.

Learn how to brake better. It takes an SUV much longer to come to a complete stop compared to a smaller vehicle. Smaller vehicles can almost stop on a dime. SUVs have additional weight to them because of their size, which increases the amount of time needed to come to a stop.

If you or a loved one has been injured in an SUV accident, contact our firm to discuss your case and learn how to protect your rights in Houston, Texas.
