Summer: Warm days, sunshine and deadly dangers

Summer hazards can take you by surprise. After enduring all the harsh weather and risks associated with winter, people tend to naturally let their guard down when the days get warm and the weather turns fair.

Unfortunately, a lot of summer activities can be surprisingly dangerous -- and some dangers can quickly turn deadly:

1. Mowing the lawn

Regular lawn mowers can be dangerous just because they can catch toes or send sticks and stones flying into someone's eyes. However, a riding mower can be outright deadly. A lot of people don't think much about letting their kids ride a mower, but those heavy yard tools are actually dangerous machines that can kill their riders if they happen to topple over. Adults also risk life-threatening injuries from mower blades if they try to repair a faulty mower on their own and accidentally start the engine. Teens working summer landscaping jobs are also at similar risk.

2. Overexposure to heat

Dehydration and heatstroke often go together because people who don't take in enough fluids to replace what they've sweated out can quickly progress to heatstroke. Heatstroke occurs when your internal body temperature rises too high. You may stop sweating, hallucinate, have a seizure, pass out and die without quick treatment.

It's a mistake to think that you're at risk of heatstroke only on vacation -- many newly graduated teens get their first real jobs in the summer and work outside jobs, especially in construction. If their bodies aren't used to the heat, and they aren't given an acclimation period when they first start and get adequately trained, they may have no idea of the risk they face.

3. Drowning accidents

Drownings increase in the summer because there are more people out on boats and pools that are open. Young children, in particular, are in danger of drowning -- it's one of the top two causes of death for children aged 1-4. Pools at hotels, theme parks and even your neighbor's backyard can pose drowning dangers, particularly if they're unattended and poorly maintained. Excursions on a boat can be incredibly hazardous unless there are life jackets available sized appropriately for young boaters.

If someone in your family dies from a summer-related hazard, you may be entitled to a wrongful death claim based on inadequate warnings, negligent workplace procedures or a negligent lack of care. Talk to an attorney today.
