There are many signs that you’re too tired to drive

You need to be 100 percent alert when you are operating a motor vehicle. If you're not, there's a greater chance of causing an accident.

Drowsy driving remains a major problem throughout the United States, with 60 percent of Americans noting that they have operated a vehicle while feeling sleepy. Taking this one step further, 37 percent admit to have fallen asleep behind the wheel over the past year!

It sounds simple enough to understand when you are too tired to drive, but this is not always the case. Many people find it difficult to know when they are too tired to drive. For this reason, they attempt to hit the road when what they should be doing is sleeping.

Here are some of the top signs that you are too tired to drive and need immediate rest:

  • Difficulty focusing on the road ahead
  • Daydreaming and/or disconnected thoughts
  • Trouble with short-term memory, such as what you passed over the last few miles
  • Rubbing your eyes and yawning
  • Trouble keeping your head steady and looking at the road
  • Drifting from one lane to another
  • Feelings of aggression (road rage)

All of these signs point toward somebody who is too tired to be operating a motor vehicle.

While it's good that you understand these signs, as they may help you recognize when a break is necessary, there's something else you need to remember: Not all drivers will take as much caution as you.

Use common sense

If you are driving through the night, for example, there's a good chance that you will be driving in close proximity to somebody who is drowsy. This increases the likelihood of an accident.

If this happens, move your car to safety and call 911. Police and an ambulance will then arrive at the scene to provide the assistance you require.

Once you receive treatment, you can learn more about the cause of the accident. You may find that a drowsy driver was responsible for the crash. In this case, there are many steps you can take in an attempt to receive compensation for your injuries and other damages.
