Tips to keep your teen safe behind the wheel

The big day is right around the corner. Your daughter will soon be starting her driver's education class and, before you know it, she will be driving herself to school. Unfortunately, teens are involved in car accidents more than any other age group. This is why it is vital to teach your child safe driving techniques.

Before you turn her loose on the roads of Bellaire, be sure you take time to go over the following safety tips with your teenager. Good driving habits can make a major difference on city streets, highways and the country roads around Texas.

No cellphone use

It seems like every day there is a new story about a tragic car accident because someone decided to use one's cellphone while behind the wheel. Reinforce the idea that when she is driving it is not the time to use the phone for any reason. Even operating a vehicle while using a hands-free device is a distraction that can take our minds and eyes off the road. This means no texting, no talking and no checking the GPS.

Keep the headlights on

Since we cannot control what other drivers will do, it is important to take certain precautions to remain vigilant and visible. Tell your teenager to always drive with the headlights on, even in the daylight. This will help catch the eye of other drivers before they change lanes or make a turn that might result in an accident.

Stay within the speed limit

Speed limits exist for a reason. It is important to obey the posted speed limit signs at all times. Let your teen know that even if other cars are whizzing past and going over the speed limit, she should obey the law and not feel pressured to match speed with other cars.

No distractions

It takes time to become a skilled and experienced driver. Your child should limit distractions during the first several years behind the wheel. This includes avoiding the temptation to fiddle with the radio, play music too loud, and play chauffeur to other friends. Inexperienced drivers tend to have a hard time when it comes to reacting to an unexpected situation on the road. Distractions can cause a driver to not realize there is impending danger and to lose control of the vehicle.

The car makes a difference

Be sure your teenager is driving a car with a strong safety record. For example, a vehicle that has a lower center of gravity is less prone to roll overs. Some vehicles have high safety ratings when it comes to how they handle on various road conditions and how the body and frame react in different types collisions. In addition, always make sure the car is well maintained. For instance, regularly check the condition of the tires and the brakes.

Teaching your teenager the right driving skills can have a major impact when she is behind the wheel and the unexpected occurs. Unfortunately, it is impossible to avoid every accident, especially when another driver acted with negligence. If you or a loved one has suffered injuries due to a negligent driver, you may be able to take legal action.
