What are the top causes of deadly car accidents?

| Aug 8, 2017 | Uncategorized

As a driver, you realize there are many steps you can take to improve your overall level of safety.

For example, you can always follow the rules of the road. Along with this, you can keep your distance from other drivers who don’t appear to be paying attention to what is going on.

Unfortunately, even when you take steps in an attempt to remain safe, another driver could make a mistake that involves you in a serious crash.

Every year, thousands of people are killed in motor vehicle accidents throughout the United States. This happens on all types of roads, from city streets to rural roads to interstates.

Know the facts

You never take to the road with the idea that you will be part of an auto accident. Even so, nothing changes the fact that something bad could happen at any time.

The Auto Insurance Center used the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatal Accident Reporting System to better understand the most common causes of deadly car accidents in every state.

Generally speaking, there are nine common causes of fatal accidents. These include:

  • Failure to keep in proper lane
  • Failure to yield right of way
  • Reckless or careless driving
  • Overcorrecting
  • Not adjusting to road surface
  • Driving on wrong side of road
  • Not adjusting to road obstruction
  • Operating without required equipment
  • Improper turn

While failure to keep in proper lane is the top cause of deadly car accidents throughout the country, any of these other causes can also lead to trouble.

If you were recently part of a car accident, you may need to learn more about the cause to get full coverage from your insurance company or compensation in a lawsuit. Knowing the cause will help you better understand your legal rights and the steps you can take.

The same holds true if a loved one, such as a spouse, was killed in this type of accident. By understanding the cause, you can then formulate a strategy for moving forward.

Nobody thinks about suffering an injury in a car accident or dealing with the aftermath of a loved one’s death, but this could happen at some point. As you take care of yourself and look toward the future, don’t hesitate to learn more about the ways you can receive compensation.
