Injured by your hunting rifle? You may have a legitimate claim

Texans love to hunt, whether it's ducks, deer or feral hogs. It's a way of life passed down from generation to generation in time-honored rites of passage.

But one particular rifle manufacturer — Savage Arms — is itself coming under fire for alleged design flaws in its stainless steel muzzleloader, the 10 ML-II. There are multiple lawsuits pending based on the weapon reportedly exploding.

The exact number of lawsuits and claims that have been filed against the manufacturer are unknown. But the company has already settled some plaintiffs' claims. It's estimated that at least several scores, and potentially hundreds, of hunters have been injured and maimed from gun barrels cracking, splitting, bursting or exploding.

According to the Associated Press, one such hapless hunter lost parts of two of the fingers of his right hand as well as his hearing in the right ear back in 2014 from an exploding muzzleloader. He filed a lawsuit against both the parent company of the manufacturer, Vista Outdoor, and Savage Arms. He claimed that manufacturers knew about the hazards their rifle posed, yet allowed it to remain on the market.

In the same AP report, they mentioned a settlement to one claimant where the company tried to blame the injured hunter for improperly loading the weapon when it "blew apart" on a 2009 hunting trip.

Those who have been injured due to improperly designed or manufactured products have a right to seek compensation for their losses and damages. The survivors of those who died as a result of a product's malfunctioning may also seek compensation by filing a wrongful death claim.
