3 ways to talk to your teenager about distracted driving

Distracted driving is a danger all across the United States, not just in the Houston area. While people that have years of driving experience still become distracted while behind the wheel, teenagers seem to be at an increased risk for distracted driving. Perhaps this is due to that feeling of invincibility most young people have or maybe it is simply due to a lack of driving experience. Regardless of the reason, it is vital that you help your teenager develop safe driving skills.

One of the best ways you can help your teen learn safe driving techniques is to provide a good example. Another way is to have conversations about the dangers and consequences of distracted driving.

The challenges

Be open with your teenager about the challenges of driving and how to stay focused. You can even talk about the challenges you face while behind the wheel. Do not make it seem like it is only a problem that your teenager might face. Instead, be clear that it is something that everyone deals with and try to brainstorm together about possible solutions.

Using the phone

When we hear the text alert go off or the phone ring, it tempts us all to pick it up and check the message or answer the call. Talk to your child about the need to pull over in a safe area in order to use the phone. In addition, also indicate that stopping the car in the parking lot or rest area is the best thing to do if your teenager needs to do any other task while in the car. This might include adjusting the seat or mirrors or even checking the navigation system.

The consequences

Be open and honest about the consequences. Talk about the financial impact of a wreck as well as the physical and the moral. Your teenager needs to understand that it is not just his or her life at risk, but that other drivers and passengers are in danger as well when a driver is distracted.

If you have a new driver in your household, it is important to talk to him or her about the dangers of distracted driver. Unfortunately, even if your teenager is a perfect example of a safe driver, it might still be impossible to avoid a wreck with a negligent diver. If this happens, remember that you might be able to take legal action for the injuries and other damages your child suffered as a result of the accident.
