April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

As residents of Houston realize, the month of April can be fraught with severe weather events that make driving dangerous. But while there may not be anything people can do about the weather in southeast Texas, there are definitely ways to modify our driving patterns to keep the roads safer.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) timed its "Heads up" campaign to thwart this dangerous driving habit.

According to Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), drivers nationwide were distracted on more than 36 percent of their trips. This figure indicated an uptick of 5 percent since 2017.

CMT gathered its data using a smartphone app to measure five specific driving behaviors:

  • Using a cellphone while driving
  • At-risk speeding
  • Braking hard
  • Harsh acceleration
  • Cornering

What emerged from the data they collected were distinct patterns of distracted driving behavior, which included:

The evening commute

The time when most drivers exhibited distracted-driving behaviors was the two-hour period from 4 to 6 p.m.

Local roads riskier

When drivers were on local roads, they experienced more distractions (57 percent of driving time) than they did on highways (43 percent).

Lower speeds unsafe

The greatest number of distractions happen when the vehicle is moving at 30 - 40 mph.

Mileage breakdown

On average, drivers were distracted at 2.67 seconds per mile intervals on each trip.

Houston was one of eight American cities where CMT compared distracted-driving behavior. It also had the highest percentage of distracted driving events on trips, at nearly 40 percent.

CMT's chief technology officer stated, "In addition to raising awareness, we need to work together to change this driving behavior, effectively kicking the distraction habit and making our roads safer."

If you were injured in an accident caused by a distracted motorist, you may be able to receive financial compensation for your losses and damages.
