3 tips to avoid distractions while driving

Whether you are sitting in traffic in downtown Houston or heading out of town for a long weekend, driving can often seem like a boring task. During the commute to work or a day-long drive across the state, it can become tempting to engage in other tasks in order to alleviate the boredom.

For example, you might think that your morning drive to work is a good time to catch up on emails. Unfortunately, this behavior qualifies as distracted driving and can lead to an accident. Even paying too much attention the scenery instead of the road is a form of distracted driving and can be dangerous.

While not every driver is guilty of distracted driving, there are still too many people on the road who think they can multitask while behind the wheel. To avoid becoming one of these distracted drivers, follow these driving safety tips.

Save the phone for emergencies only

When you are operating a vehicle, it is always a good idea to have a cellular phone on hand. What is not a good idea is using that phone to pass the time while you are stuck in traffic. Instead, only take out your phone for emergency purposes.

Avoid drowsy driving

If you are driving from Houston to El Paso, you are in for a long haul surrounded by mostly flat and boring scenery. When making such a drive, it is easy to become drowsy and fall asleep behind the wheel. Driving in such a state can increase your chances of a wreck by nearly four times.

If you feel tired, pull over and either get some sleep or take a break to stretch your legs to get the blood flowing again so that you are alert. It is always better to make frequent stops or even split a trip into more than one day than risk a potentially deadly accident on the road.

Limit the activity taking place in the car

Whether your kids are fighting in the back seat or you and your friends are heading out for a night on the town, the activities of your passengers could be distracting. Try to keep the noise and other activities to a minimum so that you can stay focused on the road.

While the above safety tips can reduce your chances of an accident, it is not always possible to avoid the bad driving habits of other people. If you have suffered an injury due to a car wreck caused by a distracted driver, keep in mind that you have options. You might be able to file a claim for the compensation you deserve for your injuries and the damages to your vehicle or other property.
