Do cars of certain colors get into more accidents?

Many considerations go into the decision of which car to purchase when consumers are in the market for a new or used vehicle. Prospective buyers may cite safety concerns, pricing and various options and features when they are weighing the pros and cons of vehicles.

Aside from personal preference, is there statistical evidence indicating that vehicles of certain colors are more likely to being involved in collisions?

As it turns out, there is. One two-decade study determined that black vehicles have a 47 percent higher likelihood of being in a crash than vehicles of any other hue. This is attributable to the fact that black automobiles are much less visible than those of other colors. The problem is exacerbated during the twilight hours.

However, that doesn't mean that they are considerably safer during the daylight hours, either. Black cars have a 12 percent greater likelihood of getting into accidents than white ones during the day.

These collisions are not just fender-benders. Dark-colored vehicles have higher rates of involvement in accidents that leave individuals with life-threatening injuries.

It's not only black cars that can be accident magnets. Below are some additional low-visibility colors of vehicles:

  • Gray
  • Blue
  • Dark green
  • Silver
  • Red

Conversely, white cars are safest of all, as they are considered to be highly visible at typically low light hours of dawn and dusk, and also during the daylight hours.

Certainly any car, regardless of its color, can be involved in an accident here in Houston. If your accident was caused by another at-fault driver, you have the right to pursue compensation through the civil courts.
