Bus accident claims 8 lives

In most cases, riding a Greyhound bus to your destination is a relatively stress-free way to travel. Not having to concentrate on driving, you can nap, or using the bus WiFi, surf the web on your phone or tablet.

But is it safe? That's one question being asked in the wake of the recent deadly bus accident in New Mexico.

According to investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the bus involved in the accident was fairly new. As such, all passengers had three-point safety harnesses and the trip began with a safety briefing.

Despite that, seven riders and the bus driver perished in the head-on collision with a semitruck on Interstate 40 near Thoreau, New Mexico. The medical investigator determined that all died from blunt force trauma.

After interviewing the truck driver, New Mexico State Police (NMSP) authorities learned that a tire on the semitruck blew out, causing the trucker to lose control of the big rig. It then crossed the median and slammed head-on into the Greyhound bus.

Surviving passengers reported having difficulty escaping from the wreckage in the aftermath of the fatal bus accident. One stated that the emergency windows made it harder to get out because when the passengers released the windows to crawl out, the windows came back down on top of them. In some cases, this problem caused further injuries to some of the passengers.

Last year, the NTSB gave a "satisfactory" safety rating to Greyhound. The agency also claimed the bus company's out-of-service record was below the nation's average. Still, one industry insider claims that numerous bus companies have old fleets with outdated safety equipment.

If you were injured in a bus accident, it might be possible to recover financial compensation for the injuries you suffered, as well as other damages.
