Were you injured by a drunk driver on New Year's Eve?

If your New Year's Eve celebration was marred by an accident caused by a drunk driver, you could have a long road to recovery ahead of you. The timing of this holiday, coming on the heels of the weekend, may have given some Houston residents too many opportunities to tie one on over the long weekend celebration ringing in the new year.

Drunk driving is a real problem here in southeast Texas. There were 1,024 traffic deaths in Texas in 2017 involving drunk drivers. Houston was named the deadliest city in the entire state by AAA Texas based on these numbers alone.

Law enforcement factored all of that in when planning their New Year's Eve strategies, which is why both the Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) and the Houston Police Department (HPD) ran a weekend-long no Breathalyzer refusal campaign. Drivers who get pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving who refused the Breathalyzer were then issued warrants signed by judges who were on standby. So were nurses to draw blood and local attorneys to oversee the process.

To counter the drunk driving problem, AAA of Houston offered a "Tipsy Tow" program to intoxicated drivers on New Year's Eve. Those drivers living within 10 miles of downtown Houston could catch a sober ride home and have their car towed home as well.

Inevitably, some drivers disregard such well-intentioned programs designed to save lives and prevent injuries and arrests. They arrogantly assume that they will not get into an accident or harm anyone after drinking and driving. They may not even believe that they are intoxicated.

However, one does not have to be falling-down drunk to be too tipsy to get behind the wheel of a car. Even a couple of drinks can affect a driver's judgment and reflexes. Alcohol can cause them to get into crashes that can kill and maim other motorists, their passengers and nearby pedestrians.

If you were injured by an intoxicated driver over the holidays, you have the right to pursue a claim for compensation for your injuries and other damages.
