Houston man killed in secondary wreck

Too often, a cautionary tale becomes a sad reality. Tragically, this appears to have happened. Last week's post addressed the hazard of disabled cars on the highway. By early Sunday morning, a Houston father of two lost his life in just that scenario.

Media outlet KTRK reported the man died in the accident that occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday on the 610 near Beechnut Street. According to police, a man and a woman were inside of a car that was disabled in the traffic lane. Another vehicle couldn't stop in time and slammed into the stopped car.

The initial impact led to more collisions. In all, five vehicles collided, closing the interstate for several hours.

The man in the broken-down car did not survive. His female companion suffered critical injuries and her condition remains unknown. Police didn't speculate whether impairment was suspected in any of the collisions.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing.

Despite the danger of remaining in a disabled car, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) still advises it is preferable to getting out and sprinting across multiple traffic lanes.

As we advised in our post last week, the DPS sergeant recommended calling (800) 525-5555 to report cars that have broken down on the highway.

While there is no way to know who will bear liability for the man's death, it is often possible in these types of situations to pursue civil justice for injured people and survivors of the deceased.

Filing a wrongful death lawsuit in Harris County Civil Court does not preclude any potential criminal prosecutions. It also is not dependent upon any charges, violations or citations being issued.
