Technology working to decrease distracted driving

| May 15, 2019 | Uncategorized

Distracted driving causes a significant number of car accidents every year and every day. When many people think of distracted driving, their minds jump to technology. Cell phones, navigation systems and other tech can be extremely distracting to drivers and this ultimately leads to car accidents.

While it is true that cell phone use contributes to distracted driving, many automobile and tech companies are working to create technology that will actually decrease distracted driving.

New technology

Cell phone companies and car companies have been working hard in the past few years to integrate their technology. This, in theory, would decrease the danger of distracted driving as it would decrease the number of times a driver has to take their eyes off the road or be otherwise distracted by a cell phone.

Bluetooth and other voice-activated technology lets drivers keep their eyes on the road, while still executing commands on their cell phone. Many automobile companies have started implementing this type of tech into their vehicles. Cell phone inventors like Android and Apple have also worked to make their technology more driver-friendly.

Does it work?

These efforts appear to be effective. Studies show that more advanced voice-activated and Bluetooth systems decrease the amount of mental effort a driver needs to use in order to use their cell phone. These tech systems allow drivers to program navigation systems and make phone calls while keeping their eyes and minds on the road.

The best way to avoid a distracted-driving related accident is to keep 100 percent of your focus on the road and not use your cell phone in any way. Butt these tools may help drivers who absolutely must have their cell phone accessible while on the road.
