Heads Up campaign sweeping across Texas

By now, most people are aware of the dangers that distracted driving creates on Texas roads. When drivers take their eyes off the road, their hands off the wheel or their minds off of driving, the chances of a life-threatening car accident multiply significantly.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT), these accidents are 100% preventable. And they have launched a campaign in an effort to eliminate distracted driving.

Campaign telling drivers to keep their Heads Up

At the beginning of June, TXDOT began a program called Heads Up Texas that they will take around the state this summer to demonstrate the risks of distracted driving.

The program uses virtual reality to educate drivers and show them what could happen when they do not pay attention behind the wheel. The technology also simulates an accident to show the damage distracted driving can do.

The movement is not just directed at texting either

CBS4 News reports that TXDOT's campaign targets multiple kinds of distracted driving, including:

  • Texting while driving
  • Eating behind the wheel
  • Using GPS systems
  • Changing radio stations
  • Grooming or applying makeup

Texting behind the wheel might be one of the most dangerous forms of distracted driving. Just sending a text involves all visual, manual and cognitive distractions.

However, all forms of distracted driving are dangerous, and TXDOT wants to show the danger that results from any activity that takes a driver's attention away from the road.

Reducing distracted driving is critical

The news report states that more than half a million crashes occurred on Texas roads last year. And nearly 90,000 of those accidents were caused by distracted driving.

These accidents result in many people losing their lives or their loved ones. Drivers may think that sending a quick text may not seem like a big deal, but it can cause irreversible damage. To be safe on the road, drivers must always give their full attention to the task at hand. That way, they have time to react to any of the hazards they might face.

Individuals might be able to collect compensation if a distracted driver leaves them injured. However, hopefully campaigns like Heads Up Texas will prevent that from happening.

If more drivers keep their attention on the road, they can also help prevent the number of accidents and life-changing injuries from rising in the future.
