Avoid causing dangers when traveling near tractor-trailers

Sharing the road with other travelers is just a way of life. Although you may sometimes find yourself on a small road with no other cars around, you likely wind up in traffic more often than not, especially if traveling the busy highways.

As you travel to your destinations, you undoubtedly drive near tractor-trailer trucks. Like many other Texas drivers, staying in close proximity to these big rigs may leave you feeling anxious. This feeling is not unwarranted as truck drivers often have more limited visibility than individuals do in smaller vehicles, and an accident involving a tractor-trailer could easily have devastating outcomes.

Staying safe on the road

Though you may think that most truck-related accidents are the fault of the truck driver, it is not always the case. As a result, you may want to make sure that you do your part to not create a dangerous scenario while on the road. Some ways you can help yourself lessen the likelihood of an accident include the following:

  • Do not change lanes suddenly in front of a tractor-trailer.
  • Do not pass a truck when it is not safe to do so.
  • Avoid driving between large trucks.
  • Do not drive in the "no-zones" behind and beside big rigs, which are areas where the truck driver cannot see your vehicle.
  • Do not turn in front of or pull out in front of an oncoming tractor-trailer.
  • Do not stop your vehicle in a travel lane or abandon it in a travel lane.
  • Do not enter the space of a truck making a wide right turn.
  • Do slow down or speed up to accommodate a truck trying to merge onto a roadway or change lanes.
  • Do not improperly merge onto a roadway or enter the roadway slowly in front of a moving truck.

These few driving tips could help you practice safe driving habits and ensure that you do not unnecessarily put yourself and others in danger when a tractor-trailer is nearby.

Accidents happen

Unfortunately, even if you do your best to accommodate truck drivers, crashes can still take place. If you suffer serious injuries in a car accident involving a tractor-trailer, you may want to consider your legal options. Filing a personal injury claim against the liable parties could allow you to seek compensation for allowable damages, such as medical bills and lost wages.
