Were you involved in a collision caused by tire issues?

When you own a car, you must do, or, at least, should do, all sorts of things to keep your vehicle functioning at its greatest potential. Various factors, such as whether you purchased a car straight off the showroom floor or snagged a good deal on a pre-owned vehicle, may affect how well your car runs and how long it lasts. Certain issues can pose safety risks if you, the car owner, do not stay on top of them.

Tire maintenance is definitely one of those issues. Do you regularly check the air pressure in your tires? If you furrowed your brow when you read the previous sentence because you didn't know you were supposed to, it might be problem, but you're not the first car owner to lack tire safety knowledge. The more you know, the safer you'll be when navigating Texas roadways.

Tire rotation is important

You can research how often you should rotate the tires on your car. Regular tire rotation helps you get more even wear out of your tires. Most car experts say that rotating your tires every 5,000 - 7,000 miles is the right frequency for optimum tire safety.

Why rear tires are also important

It you hit a patch of slippery road while driving a car that has worn down rear tires, you're likely to skid or even go into a spin. If you are buying two new tires, it may be best to put them on the rear axle. This way, you can rest assured that your back tires will help you keep control of your steering if you have to drive on wet or slippery roads.

Always check tire pressure in the morning, before driving

Even if you understand the importance of regularly checking your tires' air pressure, it's also critical that you do it when the engine is cool. The best time to check tire pressure is first thing in the morning, after your vehicle has been sitting all night. If you do it in the middle of the day or try it when the engine is hot, you may not get an accurate reading.

You'll need a coin to check the treads

Bald tires are highly dangerous. If you're sharing the road with another motorist who is traveling in a vehicle with bald tires, one of the tires could blow at any time. Tire blowouts often lead to collision. Most car owners, even those who aren't so diligent about car maintenance, usually know when their tires are worn down. To check your treads, place a quarter in a groove. If you see above Washington's head, your tires are too worn for safe travel.

How do you know how much air to put in your tires?

In your car manual, as well on the inside of your car door, you can find the proper number for tire air pressure in your particular vehicle. Driving around with too much or too little air in your tires places you and those with whom you share the road at risk for injury.

If a tire-safety issue causes collision

A car owner who is negligent about tire maintenance places himself or herself, as well as other travelers at risk. Car manufacturers and tire distributors or sales companies are obligated to make sure the tires they are placing into customers' hands are properly designed and safe to use. If another driver's tire negligence causes a collision resulting in your injury, you may be able to pursue the compensation you deserve through a personal injury claim.
