Car accidents: 4 high school students dead in Texas

Four high school students are tragically dead following a serious crash. Texas authorities have confirmed the deaths of four teenagers in the early evening of Nov. 4 in a two-car crash that also injured three other people. As with most car accidents, police are still looking into the cause of the accident.

Very little information about the specifics of the accident has been made available to the public at this time. Chief Mike Jones of the Lavon Police Department says the crash occurred near the intersection of Main Street and Highway 78 in Collin County. Two vehicles were involved, one carrying four high schoolers between the ages of 16 and 17, and the other carrying at least four individuals who were not named in the report.

All four students -- two male and two female -- were killed in the crash. Three individuals occupying the second vehicle were also taken to local hospitals with injuries described as not being life-threatening. Their current conditions are unknown, and they have not been publicly identified at this time. Police have not ruled out recklessness, negligence or even intoxication as possible factors in this accident, but they are not releasing further information until more evidence can be gathered.

Depending on who Texas authorities believe predicated the accident, charges could yet be forthcoming. However, in car accidents wherein the responsible driver is also killed, while no charges are filed posthumously, the family of other deceased victims are entitled to file wrongful death lawsuits against that driver's estate. This is handled through a civil court, separate from any criminal charges that might be filed otherwise.
