App rewards users for avoiding distracted driving

Most people realize that using their cellphones or similar devices while driving is dangerous. Many states, including Texas, have implemented laws to curb distracted driving, but some drivers still refuse to put down their phones. A new app aims to change that by giving drivers rewards for not using their phones behind the wheel.

The app is called Safe 2 Save. If a person has the app on their phone and doesn't use their phone while driving, the app rewards them with free perks, such as meals and hotel rooms. One study examined the effect it had on teen drivers and found that teens used their phones 21% less after using the app. With high school students specifically, there was a usage reduction of nearly 15%.

This is good news since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported over 3,100 people lost their lives in 2017 due to distracted driving. The app also promoted a contest in conjunction with Texas A&M to encourage people to stop driving distracted. Nearly 6,000 participants drove almost 39,000 hours without distraction.

Officials hope that people will realize just how easy it is to get distracted while driving. They point out that texting on cellphones is not the only culprit. Even something as simple as changing a song or posting to social media can pose a distraction.

Even with these admirable efforts, distracted driving accidents will still happen. For those here in Texas who have been hurt or lost a loved one because of another driver's negligence, there are ways to hold that person accountable. Filing a personal injury or wrongful death claim under the guidance of an attorney may be the best course of action.
