What kinds of cars get into the most motor vehicle accidents?

Experts in different fields are constantly working to make cars safer. Their efforts often work, helping to reduce not just the number of crashes, but the severity of accidents when they actually happen. There is no overstating just how important it is to save even one life, and these safety measures have saved countless.

Unfortunately, motor vehicle accidents still happen far too often, and here in Texas, there is no exception. Some models of cars are more likely to be in an accident than others, and some of them have higher rates of severe injuries and fatalities. If you are in the market for a new vehicle, experts have advice regarding which models of vehicles are safer than others and what this all means for your family.

The most dangerous vehicles

The study was based on data from the U.S. Department of Transportation. It looked at cars from model years for 2013-2017 and crashes in those cars that occurred from 2012-2017. The data also accounted for the mileage driven compared with how many deaths occurred in the cars. Here are the top 14 cars with the most fatal crashes:

  • Mitsubishi Mirage
  • Chevrolet Corvette
  • Honda Fit
  • Kia Forte
  • Chevrolet Spark
  • Subaru BRZ
  • Nissan 370Z
  • Nissan Versa
  • Kia Rio
  • Dodge Challenger
  • Chevrolet Camaro
  • Kia Soul
  • Hyundai Veloster Turbo
  • Nissan Versa Note

What we can learn from the list

First, experts point out that many of these vehicles with high fatality rates did not do well in crash tests and do not have additional safety features that other cars have that didn't make the list. They advise purchasing a car that not only has a good crash rating, but also one that has several safety features. However, they also admit that the best way to avoid a crash is by practicing safe driving habits.

They also point out that the cars on the list are all smaller models or sport coupes. In the case of the smaller vehicles, they aren't as able to protect the people inside the car from injury as is a larger vehicle. When it comes to sports cars, people seem to be more likely to engage in risky driving behavior, such as speeding, which could account for some of these higher fatality rates.

Why all of this matters

Even with advancements in safety features, far too many people still die in car crashes. One study found that, in 2017, over 37,000 people died in car accidents. One large demographic affected is that of teen drivers. Car accidents are responsible for a third of teenager fatalities, making them the primary cause of death for that age bracket. If you're worried about keeping your young family members safe while driving, this information is likely vital for you.

No matter the circumstance, losing a loved one to a car crash is a horrific event that no family should have to endure. It can seem even worse when someone else is to blame for the motor vehicle accident. If that is the case, families deserve to know that they have available legal options to hold responsible parties accountable.
